Species: Homo neanderthalensis
Discovered by: Louis Capitan and Denis Peyrony
Date of Discovery: 1909
Details: La Ferrassie rock shelter yielded skeletal remains from seven Neanderthal individuals, including one middle-aged male, one adult female, and five juveniles. Today the specimen La Ferrassie 1, shown here, is considered a classic example of Neanderthal anatomy.
